"The Drummer Boy." Obtained from Mrs. William Franklin, Crossnore, Avery County, North Carolina, July, 1930.
1. On Shiloh's dark and bloody ground The dead and wounded lay around. Amid these were a drummer boy Who beat the drum that day.
2. A wounded soldier helt him up; This drum was by his side;
He clasped his hands and raised his eyes, And prayed before he died.
3. "Look down upon the battle-field As Thou art a Heavenly Friend; Have mercy on our simple souls." The soldiers cried, "Amen."
4. They gathered 'round the little group; Each soldier knelt and cried:
"Oh, listen to the drummer boy, Who prayed before he died."
5. They fold the winding sheet; I've pound a key unto his grave. How many loved the drummer boy Who prayed before he died!
6. How many homes are desolate! How many hearts are sore!
